5 ways to take part in Wellness Month 2017

Dental school can be incredibly stressful. Even the healthiest and most confident student can succumb to hard days, external pressures and self-doubt. Depression and burnout are real concerns. In spring of 2014, ASDA lost our past president, Jiwon Lee, to suicide. Later that year, then-president Dr. Kris Mendoza wrote, “We wished we would have known that she was suffering. Everyone wishes they could have helped her. But she kept her troubles to herself.”

That’s why the Wellness Initiative is a priority at ASDA, and why we celebrate Wellness Month in September. ASDA wants to ensure that all of our members have access to essential resources and an understanding of where to go for help when you’re not doing well.

ASDA’s second annual Wellness Month kicks off this Friday, Sept. 1. Here are five ways you can get involved on your own or with your classmates:

  1. Sign up for free webinars. This year’s slate includes:

ASDA’s past wellness webinars are also available as recordings on YouTube.

  1. Join the Step Out for Wellness challenge. Walking just 30 minutes a day is an easy way to boost personal wellness. Use your FitBit or fitness app to track your total steps, then submit the number to your chapter. At the end of Wellness Month, the individual student with the most steps walked will win a $100 gift card. The winning chapter will win lunch.
  1. Take part in activities planned at your school. Most chapters are planning some kind of wellness event. Offerings range from group yoga classes to lunch and learns on nutrition and mental health. Find out what your chapter is planning and make time to get involved.
  1. Share your personal wellness activities on social media and win prizes. Use one of our speech bubble signs in an Instagram post, showing off your favorite wellness activity or how many steps you walked that day. Or create and post a #WorkoutWithASDA video.
  1. If you’re struggling, tell a friend, a family member or a professor about it. Ask for help, and you’ll find that there are resources to help you stay balanced and healthy. You don’t have to go it alone. Your ASDA family wants to help. Don’t keep your troubles to yourself.

ASDA’s Wellness Month is generously supported by ADA student members insurance plans underwritten by Great-West Financial.

There is no such thing as a free lunch

This post originally appeared on January 20, 2014

One of the most well-known ideas in the business world is: “There is no such thing as a free lunch.” What this really means is that when you decide to do something, there is always something that you could have done instead, but chose not to. The “thing you could have done” is a lost opportunity. You gave up something to do or get something else. This idea is known as “opportunity cost.”

Opportunity cost is something that is constantly affecting every person’s life and yet it is something that many ignore. Should you go for a run or stay home and watch TV? Should you go to dental school or find a career using your undergraduate degree? What seems like a minor decision may affect the “bigger picture” in your life.

When it comes to finances, the idea that there is no such thing as a free lunch can be especially significant. Due to the power of compound interest, the choice to go out to eat one weekend instead of staying at home may seem like only $30 or $40 out of your pocket, but it may mean several thousand in lost potential income over 40 years of calculated growth if the same $40 was invested instead. Keep this idea in mind when you make your day-to-day decisions. It is a simple concept and relies on simple decisions in one’s everyday life; yet, it may have a big impact on your wallet if you consistently choose to incur unnecessary expenses now rather than saving for toward your future.

Can you relate to this phrase? Share your experience with opportunity cost in the comments below.

Do's and don'ts for practice leadership: Thinking outside the practice

The day-to-day can be all-consuming. When you're in the practice, it's go, go, go! Some days, it's hard to catch your breath. That's why it's so important for dentists to find time to renew, and that means getting away from the office, notes Dr. Roger P. Levin in his latest Practice Success tip.

A student’s take on the New Dentist Committee

Student and professional members of the SNDS’s New Dentist Committee

I am at the start of my third year, wondering how I am going to survive through all the clinical requirements, when I am asked to be a student representative for the New Dentist Committee of the Southern Nevada Dental Society. I hesitated at first, having so much on my plate already. In the end I decided it would be a very good opportunity to get involved in a different aspect of dentistry. A year later, I can officially say I am glad to be a part of this group. The New Dentist Committee is comprised of local dentists who have been out of school for 10 years or fewer. I joined two others as the dental student members of the committee. The committee’s main objective is to build strong leaders within organized dentistry by advocating for member benefits, resources and services. They also strive to bridge the gap between dentists and dental students.

Over the past year, I have been able to help plan successful events both in social and academic settings. The social events allowed dental students to mingle with local dentists and gain different perspectives on life after dental school. Preparing for that transition can be tough, and it helps to talk to others who have gone through it recently. Several of the new dentists graduated from our school, so they had advice for how to stay on track during the last two years and graduate on time. On the academic side, we hosted a variety of panels at the school where professionals came in to speak about topics from financial planning to legal pitfalls, including how to avoid getting sued. Students found these panels extremely valuable, since we don’t necessarily learn that information in the classroom. In fact, these panels were such a success that several more are planned for the upcoming year. New topics will include CV and resume writing and contract negotiation.

The dentists on the New Dentist Committee of the Southern Nevada Dental Society have truly been amazing to work with. They are always open to student ideas and constantly reach out to see if there is anything we may need. Thanks to this organization, students are starting to feel less panicked about what comes after graduation. I look forward to working with them and the new student representatives. Together we’re building a strong base of support and information for students and professionals.

The ADA’s New Dentist Committee also exists at the national level, representing each of the ADA’s regional districts. Find out more at http://www.ada.org/en/member-center/leadership-governance/councils-commissions-and-committees/current-councils-and-commissions/new-dentist-committee.

Dr. Alvin Danenberg
I write about diet and lifestyle changes that impact our overall health, which includes the health of the mouth. When discussing dental decay, I think it is important to understand the real cause of dental decay. There were societies in history, and there are societies in remote areas of the world today, who hardly ever suffered from dental disease. As a matter of fact, these societies rarely suffered from chronic diseases, which are prevalent in modern societies today. Here is an excellent article that was published in the Journal of Dental Research in 2015 that tries to place the blame of dental decay where it really should be placed: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Diet+and+Dental+Caries%3A+The+Pivotal+Role+of+Free+Sugars+Reemphasized

Easy recipes for the on-the-go dental student

Strawberry Flourless Banana Oat Muffins

If there’s one thing a dental student can never have too many of, it’s easy, nutritious recipes that are quick to make. Muffins are a perfect breakfast for those early school mornings and up the nutrients with the addition of oat flour and fruit. Burrito bowls are great for weeknight dinners because they’re fast, fresh and can save a lot of money instead of going to your favorite chain. Below are two of my favorites for simple, on-the-go meals and snacks.

Strawberry Flourless Banana Oat Muffins (pictured above)

– 2 cups oat flour (just rolled oats that have been blended)
– 1 ripe banana
– 1 tablespoon brown sugar
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 2 large eggs
– 1 teaspoon baking soda
– ½ teaspoon baking powder
– 1 teaspoon cinnamon
– 1 cup of sliced strawberries

* Can add chocolate chips for sweetness *

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray muffin tin with non-stick spray.
2. Combine banana, brown sugar, vanilla and eggs in a bowl.
3. Blend oats until they’re the consistency of flour (or you can use a food processor).
4. In another bowl, combine baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and oats.
5. Add both bowls together until fully combined.
6. Stir in the strawberry slices (and chocolate chips if you please!).
7. Separate the mixture evenly to fill each muffin cup about ¾ of the way full.
8. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean from the middle of a muffin.
9. Remove and let cool. Makes about 12 muffins.

Chicken Guacamole Burrito Bowl

Chicken Guacamole Burrito Bowl

– 1 pepper (whichever color you prefer)
– 1 yellow onion
– 1 pound of thinly sliced chicken breast
– 2 cups whole grain rice (or quinoa)
– ½ small red tomato
– 1 avocado
– 1 lime
– Salt, pepper and cumin
– Olive oil
– Cotija cheese

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Slice onion and pepper into thin slices (save a couple slices of the onion). Toss in 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil, salt and pepper.
3. Lay peppers and onions on baking sheet and cook for about 20 minutes.
4. Add olive oil and cumin to chicken breast and cook until done in oven. Slice into cubes/thin pieces.
5. Blend avocado, salt, pepper and lime juice until evenly mixed. Transfer to bowl and add tomato slices and leftover onion.
6. Cook rice (or quinoa) as directed on the package.
7. Place rice in bowls and top with peppers and onions. Add chicken and guacamole. Top with cotija cheese as desired.

Enjoy these recipes!

Are porous implants as stable as threaded ones?

Threaded implants are thought to provide both better primary stability and connection to bone than porous implants, but research to back that up is lacking. A new study examined the mechanical stability of the two implants and found that porous ones appeared to provide sufficient support by increasing contact between bone and the implant.

Teaching is the greatest form of learning

My family name translates from Sanskrit to “teacher” – something my dad has always prided himself and has hoped to pass on. He is a professor of pharmacology and thrives on knowledge. There’s something about passion in delivery that can make or break a student’s learning experience – and for someone like my dad, whose first language is not English, that is a daunting task and incredible feat to overcome.

Since 2015, I have been at the clinical adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry while maintaining partnership at my practice – but I wanted to somehow give back to the school that has given me nearly my entire adult education. The decision was easy.

I’ve truly learned a lot by teaching so far. There are a few takeaways I remind myself while I’m at the ‘U’ – and I hope they are useful.

  1. Keep it about the student experience. The first thing I did on my first day was sheepishly apologize for any complaining I did as a student. While that was met with laughter and forgiveness, I was actually serious. You pour your hearts into your work, and it’s our responsibility as instructors to maximize the experience you receive in a protected environment. You may become flustered with how things are done – remember we are here to let you know things are done a certain way for a reason.
  2. Try to maintain the student-instructor definition. I am younger than most adjunct faculty, so many students are my contemporaries. When school ends, those boundaries can disintegrate, but keep it professional during your daily interaction. I love giving advice, but I’m not taking them out for happy hour – though I have seen this happen. Try not to give the impression of favoritism, so tread lightly here.
  3. Caution with social media. Don’t post personal stuff online that could embarrass someone or draw attention. I know this first hand and had to do some damage control. The degrees of separation are too few in a student-instructor environment, so you don’t want to be responsible for embarrassment that is easily avoidable.
  4. There’s a great big world out there for the taking, so provide useful advice and resources that will guide decisions. Your time will come to do what you’ve worked so hard to do.
  5. Maintain humility. Students too. Plain and simple, instructors know a lot, but I learn just as much from students as they can from me, and I always try to keep a level head about it. I haven’t been out of school that long and frankly, I feel like I go there to learn just as much as you do, and I love that about the job.

One of the best things about being clinical faculty is seeing my old classmates and friends do the same thing nationwide in different capacities. I hope there’s a new trend among new dentists to give back – and that goes beyond the classroom. If you’re in an area where you have the opportunity to educate your community, please take advantage of it. You make impacts on lives daily, educating along the way. I’ve made my dad proud.
