How to have a budget-friendly night out
We all know the scenario. It’s Sunday. You wake up and think about whether or not you should check your bank account after your weekend’s activities. While we are all wary of our wallets, this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a nice night out every now and then. Here are some tips to help you save a few dollars while still making the most of your weekends.
Save on dinner
According to data analyzed by the Food Institute, millennials spend nearly $3,000 each year eating out. That’s 4 percent more than the baby boomer generation. Here are ways to curb your spending when having dinner at a restaurant.
1. Friends are family. Portions can be huge, and many restaurants have specific dishes meant for sharing family-style. Grab a couple friends and split a few dishes and the bill. Still hungry? Pick an inexpensive appetizer or dessert — but not both.
2. Did someone say happy hour? Check the restaurant’s website for any specials or happy hour discounts, which usually take place earlier in the week and earlier in the day. Websites such as Yelp and Groupon are also a great resource for finding check-in offers (free appetizer, anyone?) or discounted gift cards at local joints.
Save on drinks
With an average revenue of $24 billion dollars per year, the bar business is booming. Here are a few tips to save some cash on those weekend social nights.
1. Avoid cover charges. This one might be pretty obvious, but if you go to an establishment early enough, you may bypass having to pay to get in. Call ahead to see if there’s a cover, and try to find an option that’s free. Some places even have a guest list online that will get you in free, so check before you go.
2. Sharing is caring. See if the bar offers pitchers or larger drinks that you can share with your friends (and also split the bill).
3. K.I.S.S. My dad’s favorite phrase has always been “K.I.S.S.,” or “keep it simple, stupid.” See if the bar has any specials that night. Get to know your cheap beers and well drinks. This gives you room to be creative with some basic two-ingredient cocktails.
Other tips to help you save
1. Be your own Uber. Have a designated driver and do a quick search to see if the area you’re headed to has free parking. Of course, this isn’t always possible, so if Uber/Lyft are your only option, see if a friend hasn’t used it before. They’ll receive a credit for a free ride, and you’ll receive a discount, too, for referring them. Avoid taxis planted outside nightclubs or on busy streets, and don’t travel during peak times, as the rates will typically be higher.
2. Set a budget before you go. You don’t have to create an Excel spreadsheet with every detail of what you plan to spend, but consider giving yourself a spending limit before going out. Only want to spend $30 tonight? Withdraw $30 in cash and leave your credit cards at home. It may help harness that self-control.
3. Be a coupon clipper. This goes for restaurants and bars. Sign up to receive emails from your favorite places, especially big chain establishments. They’ll send the most discounted coupons. Don’t want to receive these in your main inbox? Set up filters that direct them to a separate folder or make a new account dedicated to promotional emails.
As students, we have to watch our spending, but part of making your way through school is developing friendships, and this may include participating in social activities. Don’t feel like you have to be a hermit in order to maintain your budget. Always be mindful of your finances, and you can still enjoy an active social life.

Risk management for dentists
After you begin to practice dentistry, you will seek advice from advisors in all kinds of arenas: legal, accounting, financial and more. You will rely on the advice of these key advisors to make wise and beneficial decisions. Therefore, not only is it important that you form a “team” of dental-specific advisors to help guide you during your entire career, but it is important to understand the areas in which risk management will be imperative to you as a practitioner.
1. Incorporation: If you are an independent contractor or you own your practice, for the most complete liability protection, it is often wise to form an entity (LLC or corporation) under which you operate. If you purchase a building with a practice, set up a separate entity to own the building that is separate from ownership of your dental practice. This is helpful in the event that someone is injured on the premises and not in the dental chair or if you ever decide to relocate the practice but intend to maintain ownership of the building and lease it out.
2. Insurance: It is your best protection against lawsuits. Many new dentists I have worked with have been advised to set up an LLC or S-corporation when they practice as protection from liability purposes, as we discussed above. While this entity protection is certainly helpful, if a dentist is sued for malpractice, he or she always remains personally liable for their actions. This makes carrying adequate malpractice, personal umbrella and business insurance of unmatched importance.
3. Disability insurance and emergency funds: Disability insurance, especially if you are the sole income producer in your household, becomes important if you are unable to work or unable to work to your greatest potential because of a sickness or injury. Most policies have waiting periods (typically three to six months) so that you will not collect benefits until the waiting period has passed. This makes it a necessity to accumulate at least three months of fixed expenses for your household in an emergency fund. You can access these funds in the event you are unable to work and are waiting for your disability insurance to pay benefits.
4. In-office care: Once you are protected from a liability and insurance standpoint, it is also crucial to establish in-office care procedures with your staff and patients. Early recognition of potential issues with a patient are key to resolving them before they present significant risk to your practice. Proper documentation of any recognized issues with a patient, whether it is failure to pay for services provided or documenting when a patient has been formally released from your care, is critical.
Where are some other areas you think risk management is important to a dental practice?

How to engage in advocacy after dental school
The question every fourth-year student is asking themselves right now is this: “What am I going to do after graduation?” While some may spend hours weighing different residency programs, others may contemplate joining a corporate or private practice. But there is another option to consider: advocacy.
Dr. James Wanamaker, “hASDA-been” and 2015-16 Council on Advocacy chair, has been able to incorporate advocacy into his post-grad journey. After graduating from the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in 2016, he served as a legislative intern for Representative Mike Simpson (R-ID) before starting his general practice residency at SUNY Upstate and the Syracuse VA. Simpson is one of four dentist members of Congress and has over 20 years of political experience.
“I wanted to widen my perspective on the legislative process by experiencing it from a staff viewpoint, so that I could be more effective advocating in the future,” Dr. Wanamaker says. “My hope was to also use this experience to aid in my role on the work group that planned the first ADA Dentist and Student Lobby Day. The benefits were seeing firsthand what strategies were effective and ineffective when meeting with a staffer or contacting an office on a particular issue.”
The experience reaffirmed the importance of ASDA’s advocacy efforts. He saw how many individuals came to Washington D.C. throughout the year to lobby on behalf of the groups they represent. He shared that lawmakers and staffers are impressed with how prepared students and dentists are during congressional meetings.
Dr. Wanamaker viewed this experience as another leadership opportunity to help him become a better advocate for the profession. The skills he gained from the internship have helped him in his associateship, his community and within organized dentistry.
“I learned how congressional offices are run on a daily basis and the impact that staffers and constituents have on the legislative process,” he says. “I also heard how our legislators tactfully addressed constituents with differing viewpoints. This skill is beneficial well beyond Washington; as a dentist, you may have patients who have differing opinions on your recommended treatment plan. Understanding how to see beyond your differences to work with others is a valuable skill in our profession.”
Dr. Wanamaker recommends that any student who is interested in learning more about advocacy take advantage of these types of opportunities. Mentorship and a strong resume can help prepare you for this. “One of the most valuable resources I found within organized dentistry is mentorship through leaders such as Dr. Richard Andolina. He and Sarah Milligan at ADPAC were vital in setting up my internship,” he says. “In addition to mentors, have a well-rounded resume and be flexible with your dates. The month between graduation and starting residency was the perfect time for me to get involved.”
Dr. Wanamaker’s story exemplifies the power of advocacy. He’s seen firsthand that attending lobby day makes a difference. So take advantage of every opportunity to get involved in ASDA advocacy while in dental school. There is also still time to attend an Advocacy Month event. Ask your legislative liaison to attend lobby day. Send a letter to your lawmaker about student debt. These actions will help you become a better advocate. Then when it comes time to ask the universal fourth-year question, don’t count advocacy out.
“Start small and work your way up,” Dr. Wanamaker says. “I joined my local dental society and am now the chair of the new dentist committee in my area. I also reached out to our local ADPAC action team leader to be a resource to him and my congressman. Also, if you have the opportunity to attend a state or national lobby day, I highly recommend it.”
We are fortunate to be a part of a profession where 20 dentists serve as state legislators and four serve as members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Twenty-four politicians, hailing from 16 states, in a single occupation makes a statement. This ability to make our voice heard through our members and our advocates on Capitol Hill is what betters our profession. So while your school involvement with advocacy may stop at an ADPAC membership, know that the avenue into advocacy is paved with Rely-X Luting Plus cement from the dentists that have come before us.

Giving thanks, from ASDA’s Editorial Board
This time of year, many of us slow down (just a little!) to reflect. With Thanksgiving around the corner, our thoughts of family and pumpkin pie are interspersed with gratitude and recognition for what makes us feel special. Our Editorial Board wanted to share with you some of the things for which we’re thankful this year.
My whole life, I’ve been surrounded by intelligent, accomplished, forward-thinking people. None of them are dentists. They range from lawyers to teachers to venture capitalists to water policy defenders. Even on the roughest days in dental school when I start to question my commitment, they push me to keep going. They have had faith in me all along, and I know they’re waiting with open arms across the graduation stage.
I’m thankful for the people who keep me motivated and passionate. My family is incredibly supportive, and I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am today without their love. Something as small as a five-minute call with them completely brightens my day and inspires me to keep working hard. My ASDA friends also understand and help me work through the challenges of dental school. A quick Snapchat exchange with friends at other schools makes me realize that we all face similar challenges and we overcome them together. I’m thankful for everyone who makes the little things in life so amazing.
As I go on the interview trail across the country, I’ve noticed something. The same faces keep popping up. Ohio, Virginia, Texas — all with the same company. Every first encounter with a shared coffee has been followed by second and third encounters with beers and a good time. I’m grateful to be surrounded by brilliant and genuinely great future dental colleagues.
I’m thankful that Buffalo had a massive three-day snowstorm in 2014. Past national ASDA VP Jordan Telin cornered me at a snow-day party and told me why I needed to come to Annual Session. Three years later, I landed on the Board of Trustees. Thank you, JT.
I am thankful for the opportunities that have been presented to me over the course of my dental school career. The two most rewarding were getting involved in research and ASDA. Participation in research and ASDA has provided me with invaluable experiences. If I had not had these experiences, I would not be the person I am today. Most importantly, I am thankful for my family support system that has allowed me to pursue these opportunities.
As I approach my final year of dental school, I have started to realize just how impactful a career in dentistry is. Whether it is resolving a patient’s acute pain from an infection or restoring their smile with dentures, dentistry has given us the ability to improve the quality of life of others on a daily basis. I am incredibly thankful to have the health, ability and luck to join this amazing profession.
I am thankful for life and the opportunity to care for my patients, my family and the individuals I encounter each day.
I am thankful because this year, I have an angel watching over me. This is my first Thanksgiving without my Nanie, after being at the head of my table since I was born. My first Thanksgiving without her hands in the kitchen or her story time before bed. I am thankful that I have the privilege of making her recipes, imagining her next instruction. I am thankful that I will share stories about her around my table. I am thankful that I am thriving in a school she prayed for me to get into, becoming the doctor she so proudly told everyone I was to be. I am thankful that I stand today as a brave and fearless woman because of the strong woman who came before me. This year, I am thankful to be her legacy.
Now that you’ve gotten to know us a little better, leave a comment to let us know what you’re thankful for!

Malpractice insurance, swipe right
When you hear the words “malpractice insurance,” you may think, “Yawn, insurance.” We get it. As much as we’d like to believe MedPro Group is on your mind, sadly, we know we’re not.
The subject of malpractice insurance doesn’t have to be daunting. To keep it simple, we’ve provided a list of points to help you choose the right malpractice company.
ProTip: Look for a company that can provide you with all of the following.
1. A piece of paper and a promise
Malpractice insurance is a promise to protect you, your reputation, and your future assets. This is a hefty commitment given you’re just starting your career. Financial strength rating agencies, like A.M. Best, help determine which insurance companies should be able to keep this type of promise to you. The higher the A.M. Best financial strength rating, the more financially secure the insurance company is believed to be.
2. Not all malpractice insurance policies are created equally
Take the “consent to settle clause,” for example. Every malpractice policy has one, but not every company has pure consent. Pure consent allows you to have the final say when settling a malpractice claim.
3. Occurrence
Simply put, Occurrence policies do not require the purchase of expensive tail coverage. As an ASDAmember benefit, MedPro offers Occurrence policies as low as $50.
ProTip: Ask about policy limit restrictions. MedPro’s policies allow you to choose from a variety of policy limits, including $2 million / $4 million your first year in practice.
4. Flexibility
Unsure where you’ll end up, geographically, after graduation? Go ahead, chase your dreams. An insurance company that’s able to move with you will make coast-to-coast relocations a lot easier.
5. Safety first
A malpractice insurance company who arms you with tools to improve patient safety and identify areas of risk in your practice is the kind that understands you and your profession.
MedPro’s in-house risk management teams can provide real-time expert advice, because that’s their primary focus.
ProTip: Ask if the risk management team is specialized and experienced specifically in your industry.
6. Focused, loyal, hard-working
What happens if you’re named in a malpractice lawsuit and left feeling numb, confused and afraid? An experienced claims defense team that’s trained to fight for you will help ensure you never feel alone. With 118 years of experience under our belt, MedPro successfully defends 95% of all dental claims that make it to court.
Don’t worry if your head is spinning. MedPro’s goal has always been to equip you with what you need to know to make an educated decision regarding malpractice insurance. Stop by a MedPro Lunch-and-Learn this year to learn even more, or visit MedPro.com/Dental for more information today!
