Help protect your future from ‘what if’

Imagine you’re out riding your bike, getting some exercise, enjoying the fresh air and then it happens: You have an accident. What if you’re unable to continue your studies? How would you pay your bills and your student loans?

This is when being an ADA student member gives you a real advantage: no-cost student member disability and life insurance, issued by Great-West Financial. A small portion of the premiums paid by practicing ADA members covers the costs of providing student members with coverage at no cost to them, so you’ll have a financial safety net for events like this one. And it may help protect you throughout dental school. The following outlines what you need to do each year.

First year: Get the coverage. If your school automatically enrolls you, you’re already covered. Take a moment to email your dean and administration to say thanks, then register your account online. Don’t know if your school auto-enrolls? Check with Jaclyn Agy, our student liaison. If your school isn’t auto-enrolled, it’ll just take you a minute to sign up. All you have to do is log in or register, then request activation of your coverage (if you’re not auto-enrolled) or review your account (be sure to use your personal email).

Second year: Update your account. You’re already insured, so this year, all you have to do is log in, review your coverage, make sure your contact information is still current and that you’ve designated a beneficiary for your life insurance.

Third year: Get to know your Great-West Financial insurance plan specialist. This is a good time to get acquainted with your insurance plan specialist who supports all the ADA student members at your school. Before you reach that chaotic period when you’re preparing to graduate and embarking on your new career, you’ll want to know whom to contact about converting your no-cost student members insurance. Learn about all the ways your insurance plan specialist can help you.

Fourth year: It’s that time. You’ll likely want to have insurance in place before you graduate or start working. You’ll be insured until the end of the year you graduate. To convert early to the insurance plans for practicing dentists or to obtain additional coverage, contact your insurance plan specialist to guide you through the various plans you may need, the features, coverage levels and anything else that may cause you even more stress during your D4 year. Keep your eye out for the grad survey this spring and also be sure to update your contact information anytime it changes.

You’re working hard to create a healthy and successful future as a dentist. So why take chances? Get no-cost ADA student members insurance now, so your future is protected from what if.
