DSO myths & facts

When it comes to the topic of dental support organizations (DSOs), people sometimes get the wrong idea. We’ve heard many misconceptions about what DSOs do and how we do it, so we’ve compiled a list of the most common myths to help individuals decide if DSOs are the right path for them.

Myth 1: DSOs aren’t run by dentists.

Fact: Our founder, Dr. Rick Workman, earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in 1980. He was a dentist for almost 20 years before he founded Heartland Dental. Today, our executive team is comprised of highly qualified dentists and skilled businesspeople. Since we do support dentists’ non-clinical needs, the majority of which are business related, we believe there needs to be a good mix of both (dentists and business professionals) to successfully support dentists. Our team works together to offer support to dentists, often asking them for ideas and input and encouraging collaboration.

Myth 2: If I affiliate with a DSO, I will be stripped of my professional freedom.

Fact: Heartland Dental provides non-clinical services to supported dentists and gives them the tools they need to advance and be successful. It is important to be able to run your office the way you see fit, and we give supported dentists the freedom to do that. Dentists make the final decision on all clinical matters. Even as far as non-clinical support, we always welcome your thoughts and opinions so that we can continue to improve upon the services we offer.

Myth 3: The sole focus of a DSO is production, not patients.

Fact: Our main priority is patients. All dental professionals have the same end goal of advancing the dental industry for the benefit of their patients. Whether your path to dentistry leads you to private practice or to be supported by a DSO, your passion for dentistry and your commitment to your patients should be no different. Our supported dentists are offered continuing education courses solely based on improving their leadership skills for the benefit of their office staff and patients. The key to your success is doing right by every single patient every single time.

The reality is, people are afraid of what they don’t know. At Heartland Dental, our focus is to make a positive impact on the dental industry and support our dentists in the best and most effective ways possible. Ultimately, we do what we do so that our supported dentists can focus on being dentists.
